Much love & thx
To everyone that we met,
That came out,
And hit the bricks
With us on this run.
And thx to Tomaroo
Our tour manager.
It was truly epic.
My favorite tour thus far
Simply for the fact
No one got sick
And we played
Better than ever
And had very few big problems
To solve on the trail.
It’s still a work in process,
Musically,
But at least we have
Something to reach toward.
Keep
Fighting the good fight
Out there.
We really appreciate
The love & support
And we never take this shit
For granted.
We are very aware of the fact
That we are lucky
To get the opportunity
To do this.
Thx U.

THE FARMER'S ALMANAC SCARECROW | BACK STORY & PRINTS

18X27” PRINT | THE SCARECROW
- Signed/limited-edition: #1-25
- $25/each + shipping.
-Full-color landscape print on 80lb matte
- BUY: http://brotherdege.net/merch
DETAIL: This is a landscape, alternate shot
of the Farmer’s Almanac cover,
Photographed by Lucius Fontenot
in Mowata, Louisiana,
Where my grandparents, great grandparents
Are from.
The symbolism of the scarecrow
(a crucified, Christ-like scarecrow figure,
Playing upon our preprogrammed superstitions,
Founded or unfounded fears, divine superintendence,
As well as the crumbling ideal
Of the American dream or ideal
Of moneid success)
Has been floating around in my head
And in my songs
For a loooong time.
However, a cohesive album concept,
Devoted to the sad beauty
& ragged narcotic wasteland
Of small town rural America
Didn’t begin to materialize
Until I moved to New Orleans
And began playfully,
Almost unthinkingly,
Building a scarecrow sculpture
Composed of driftwood
Pulled from the Mississippi River
Three blocks away from my house.
In my spare time,
While walking our dog
With my girlfriend,
I began noticing
All of the anthropomorphic shaped driftwood,
Shoring up
Along the banks of the Mississippi.
I began collecting the interesting pieces
Taking them home
And slowly,
Assembling the pieces
Of the Scarecrow in sections.
After a couple weeks
Of trial & error,
I found a workable shape
And a system of assembly,
Namely, attaching all of the pieces
Together with long drywall screws
And lag bolts.
After that, I bought him an old overcoat,
Had a custom hat made,
And draped him
In some colorful tug & salvage ropes
I also found along the banks
Of the river.
Eventually I mounted the whole thing
On an 8 foot tall pine 4x4,
Which was essential
As the completed scarecrows
Weighs about 75 lbs.
The end result came out so good,
I tried to make a second scarecrow.
Just to have as a backup.
It didn’t come out nearly as good,
So burned it in our courtyard
In New Orleans and filmed it.
Yes, it did freak out the neighbors.
And yes, we did get complaints.
Nonetheless,
The incredibly talented
Lucius Fontenot shot the cover
At crawfish pond
In Mowata, Louisiana
Near the farmland where
My Cajun-French grandparents,
Great grandparents grew up
And worked the land for an indeterminate
Number of generations.
We shot the cover
On a cold day in January 2018.
The album was released June 1, 2018.
The Scarecrow now lives in a storage room
In Lafayette, Louisiana.
I’ll eventually either replant him
Or sell him for auction
At some point in the future.
Cheers.
Much love & thx to everyone involved.

AMERICAN LONGHAIR & SCARECROW POSTERS | NOW AVAILABLE $25

NOW AVAILABLE | Signed & numbered, 18x27 inch American Longhair & Farmers Almanac prints (on 80lb matte stock). Limited edition: #1-25. $25 each + shipping at BrotherDege.net. We Shot the American Longhair cover on a whim after I read an article on Bruce Schultz’s tin type photos. I brought the chair, shotguns, flowers to stick in the barrels (referencing 60s anti-war protests), my ‘65 Dobro that I wrote “House of the Dying Sun” with, and the slide that is on my finger. The inspiration for the shot comes from an old photo of my Cajun grandparents wedding day in southern Louisiana - one of my favorite photos of all time. They were farmers who saved up enough money, working Acadia parish farmland (pictured in the background of the Farmers Almanac Scarecrow photo) for years until they saved up enough money to open a small country store and eventually send my mother to nursing school. If you’ll notice my hands are folded in the same manner as my grandfathers in the wedding photo. It took a 4-5 tries to get the shot, but when we did, we knew it was the one. I still have the original tin-type plates, including the outtakes in my American Longhair archive box. Everything is connected. And the journey goes on.

Photography by Bruce Schultz (American Longhair) & @lucius_a_fontenot_photography (Scarecrow)

ROADLOG: SOLO OCULO + THE 'RAM FAM

ROADLOG: SOLO OCULO | THE ‘RAM FAM
This last east coast run
with Pentagram
And The Dirty Streets
Was a good run.
Short, but intense.
But also super introspective.
I did the tour solo
In the truest sense of the word.
All of my immediate circle
Of family, friends,
And band mates,
Who usually accompany me
And help out & manage things,
Were busy working,
Thus they couldn’t join me
On the trek.
So I went rolled by myself.
Going it alone out there
On the long haul 10 hr drives,
It gives one time
To meditatively reflect upon
One’s life and journey
And assess the many things
About yourself
That you may or may not
Always like:
Quirks, emotional needs,
Lifelong insecurities,
Resentments, shortcomings,
Selfish & addictive Inclinations.
Also,
The huge number
Of sacrifices necessary
In order to continue
Doing this little
Suspended adolescent
Rock & roll
Creative career/lifestyle.
Etc.
So many things.
So much time & energy required.
So much self-work to do.
To improve on,
Tweak,
And course correct.
All these things
Come flooding in
With the miles and miles
Of the oncoming road.
Alone.
HWY.
Bridges.
Anonymous exits.
Small Towns.
Strangers,
Mutedly incased
In their cars,
Floating by.
Pondering their own lives.
Or maybe not.
It was a tough little run,
Driving, loading
In/out, playing.
Climbing into a hotel bed
By one’s self.
Staring at the walls.
Drone of the TV.
The road alone
Is quiet
And deafening.
And sometimes lonely.
In so many ways,
We are all alone,
Out there / In here,
Sitting atop
A pile of years.
Wondering.
Where does it go?
What does it mean? L
Sigh.
The three things
I learned on this tour:
1. Never move to New Jersey.
2. Never drive in New Jersey.
3. I really miss & truly appreciate
All of my family, close friends,
Band mates, acquaintances,
And
Hometown people.
I really do.
And I apologize to everyone
If I don’t
Say that enough.
I get distracted,
Plowing forward
And sometimes
Miss the little things
That are often more fulfilling
And sustainable
Than all the kookiness
Of the Rock & Roll Trail of Tears.
So thank you
So much
To all my family
And supportive friends
And people out there
For taking the journey
With me
And putting up
With my “stuff.”
And much thanks
And gratitude
To the whole ‘Ram Fam:
Pentagram.
Bobby, Pellet, Greg,
Matt, Pistol Peterine,
Zac, Joe, Jack, Mike.
You guys really watched
My back
And took care of me
On this run.
On all the runs.
It’s so strange how
Bands that play
Such Heavy & dark music
Almost always
Are the sweetest people.
Many of them,
Wounded and worn torn,
But so kind and giving
In ways
You wouldn’t expect
If looking in from
The outside
And not privy
To a detailed briefing
Of the fragile ins/outs
Of the inner lives
Of these complicated,
And conflicted
But gentle beasts.

ROADLOG: BENTONIA | 6/14/19

ROADLOG: BENTONIA
6/14/19
Mississippi was lit.
Bentonia, MS
To be specific.
The Town that birthed Skip James
And Jack Owens,
Legendary minor key
Dark delta pioneers.
The venue,
Blue Front Cafe
Was opened by Carey & Mary Holmes
in 1948.
In 1970,
Their son Jimmy Duck Holmes,
Now considered a blues legend,
Took it over and runs it
To this day.
Place is a straight up sweaty,
Dusty, cinder block
Delta Blues shack.
They only serve beer.
No liquor.
But everybody’s walking round
With cups of local moonshine.
Minimal PA.
Place packed.
No stage.
Just set up on the floor
and go.
Which is what I did.
After my set,
I said hello to Jimmy Duck.
He gave me a lazy handshake
And funny look,
Like, “What the fuck that noise
Is you was playing?”
And I gave him back one
That said,
“That’d be MY noise.
This how I do it, mang.”
Met a lot of good people
At this one.
Including
Mississippi John Hurt protege
R.L. Boyce,
Who was cool
And we just talked shit
Outside.
Much thx to Michael Schulze
For having me.
And to Robert Connely Farr
@robertconnelyfarr
For the photo.
